The name Almaden comes from the Arabic al-maʻdin, meaning “the mine,” and carries a remarkable legacy of value creation. Since Roman times, Almadén — in Spain — was the world’s main source of quicksilver (mercury).

When pioneers discovered mercury deposits in California in the 1820s, they honored this legacy by naming their settlement New Almaden after the Spanish original. These California mines became the oldest in the state and among the most productive mercury mines in the country.
